Machine builders such as flexible packaging machine and stick pack machine manufacturers constantly face challenges to add motion and/or automation in order to address flexibility demands of the industry. Such demands can also create safety issues within the packaging industry. However, rest assured, as there are some solutions that can successfully unite safety of the operators and flexibility of machines.
Market competition increases the pressure to improve the productivity, while innovation cycles get shorter. These factors constantly demands a need for more flexibility in packaging machines. This demand has caused a decrease in multi pack runs and batch build, consequently requiring the machines to provide multiple packaging solutions from one machine. This kind of flexibility must include an ability to maintain a high level of efficiency while performing a swift product changeover. And when it comes to introduction of flexibility in a machine, one question arises: “what will be its impact on the operator safety?” This has led the packaging industry to look for alternative packaging solutions that would not only increase the productivity but also provide a lot more flexibility. Automation along with motion control system has been able to offer the industry with such flexibility. However, it must be noted that with an increase in the motion, a robust safety system is also required in order to monitor and control additional moving components. The safety systems should be up to the industry standards and requires more than one axis controllers. Motion control products are vital when motion is added to the packaging machines.
